Cesium iodide is a colorless crystalline or crystalline powder, chemical formula CsI. Easily deliquescent, sensitive to light. Soluble in water, soluble in ethanol, slightly soluble in methanol, almost insoluble in acetone. Relative density 4.5. Melting point is 621 ℃. The boiling point is about 1280℃. Physical properties

Cesium iodide is a colorless crystal or white powder, with a density of 4.51g/cm, melting point of 621℃, boiling point of 1280℃, soluble in water (44g/100ml, 0℃; 74g/100ml, 20℃) and alcohols. When burned on a flame, the flame colour turns sky-blue.

Cesium iodide has a crystalline form of cesium chloride.

 

Cesium iodide has strong thermal stability, but it is easy to be oxidized by oxygen in humid air. Cesium iodide can also be oxidized by strong oxidants such as sodium hypochlorite, sodium bismuth, nitric acid, permanganate and chlorine gas. The solubility of iodine in cesium iodide aqueous solution increases due to CsI+I2→CsI3.

Cesium iodide can react with silver nitrate: CsI+AgNO3==CsNO3+AgI↓, in which AgI (silver iodide) is a yellow solid insoluble in water.

Cesium iodide can also react with mercurous nitrate to form cesium nitrate and mercurous iodide: 2CsI+Hg2(NO3) 2==2CsNO3+Hg2I2↓

Avoid contact with oxides, water/moisture. Soluble in water and ethanol. The solubility in 100g water is 44g (0℃) and 160g (61℃). Stable cesium iodide CsI3 can be produced by reaction with iodine. Iodine can be dissociated by oxidizing agent.
